Rachael's Cancer Blog

RAI diet started

I started my RAI diet on Monday…following the cookbook and eating nothing from the market with salt. Whole Foods had a lot of options which was nice. I have been eating corn chips without salt…are those okay? When I run out of options I get hungry. I am craving candy so I went to Walgreens and looked through all the candy…most of them did not contain the dyes that the cookbook says to avoid. I chose gumdrops and tossed the red ones to be safe.

Shots are Feb 20 and 21 which I am not looking forward too but since I had the same shot for 3 months to get pregnant, I hope I can handle two days.

Hope everyone to faring well out there!

Rachael

Paul threw a punch at your cancer.

Hello Rachel. I’m new to blogging…my name is Jennifer, not Nennafur (my username). Anyway, I’m not sure about the corn chips but I did find no-salt rice cakes w/ almond butter to be quite tasty. Popcorn w/ no-iodine salt too. I made it the old fashioned way…oil in the pan, shaking constantly. I also treated myself to Smoothie King…a “Light and Fluffy” that they say is made w/ no salt. It satisfied my need to go “out”, and tasted really good! I’ll be in your shoes in June and hope to research more by then….if you find any tips, would love to know! Good luck and try to pamper yourself…it helps. I went for a massage during the LID and rented fun movies during RAI.

Hello,
I am almost finished with my second week of the diet. I am having a hard time with it. I have been eating a lot of vegtables, fruits, roasted potatoes, some chicken and steak. Oatmeal with brown sugar and frozen fruit bars for snack. I tried the rice cakes with cinnamon, but they were not that tasty. I have my thyrogen shots Monday and Tuesday, radiation on Wednesday and scan on Friday. This is just to see if the cancer is back. My Lymph nodes are enlarged and I never had RAI because my cancer was small. Remnant came up suspiscious last year, but they didn’t do anything. I hope you loose some weight on the diet. I have lost 13 pounds in 12 days. Nice. I better have something good come out of this diet. LOL. Hope all goes well for you. Please keep in touch and good luck.

First Blog

Hi…my name is Rachael. I found this site searching for some support on line. The blogs on here are great and very helpful but each is so unique. I just completed my complete thyroid removal surgery last Tuesday at Mass General Hospital in Boston. I am on a daily dose of synthroid. Today the endocrinologist called to schedule my radiation therapy treatment. He is recommending two days of a single intramuscular shot and then a 50 microgram dose of radiation pill. I have small children so I am advised to take the pill on a Wednesday, be isolated until Thursday morning and back to the hospital for a body scan Friday. Then 5 days of isolation from the kids and not more than 2 hours in a row around people.

Has anyone had this dose? What types of advice can you give me regarding how I will feel? My dr says at this low dose I should not really have any side effects. Is it true? What advice do you have for the 2 week low iodine diet beforehand? How can I read more about foods to eat or not eat. How do I treat my clothes and towels etc while “radioactive”. I guess any advice would be welcomed.

Thank you for the support!

Fred sent you a hug.

Hi Rachel,
Welcome to the blog. You’re right—each blog is unique, but that also enables us to share commonalities.
It looks like you’re getting standard treatment. No lymph node involvement gives you the best prognosis. The injection you will get is called Thyrogen, and that will enable you to continue taking Synthroid through your treatment. Do be aware that there have been several shortages and some problems with contamination over the last couple of years. It’s an orphan drug (a drug only a few people need) and is made only by Genzyme. You can check their website for the latest info. You get to have Thyrogen because you were diagnosed early. Those of us diagnosed with late stage disease have to go off thyroid hormones completely for a month or more. It’s difficult so I am glad for you that you can stay on your meds.

This might be hard to believe, but your dose of radioactive iodine is relatively small. You probably will feel fine. I was given 154 mCi (millicuries) because I was diagnosed with advanced disease; I think the maximum dose is 200 mCi.

As for the low iodine diet, especially because you have young children, you will probably want to make food in advance and freeze it. Go to the thyca website and you can download a free cookbook for low iodine. You should wash your laundry and dishes separately for the period of isolation.

Keep asking questions. Happy New Year.
Andrea

Thank you Andrea! I really appreciate your response. Take care.

Hi Rachael, let me be the second to welcome you to the blog. I second everything that Andrea wrote, especially the part about downloading the low iodine diet cook book from the thyca website. From the day I started the diet I made enough of each meal to be able to freeze at least two servings in individual / microwavable containers. I promise that at the end of the lid you will not want to or have the energy to cook and this way you will have your meals ready to go.

Regarding the RAI treatment. It can mess with your taste buds and saliva glands. I read that you should stock up on and suck hard lemon candy. My nuclear doc recommended sucking a lemon wedge once an hour for every hour awake – and to do this for the first week. The main thing is that you want to keep the saliva flowing through those glands as the RAI can make them swell. I lost my sense of taste for awhile and had to change my tooth paste and brushing habits.

The other thing that is rarely brought up is pets. If you have small animals in the house you do not want to hold them, pet them or feed them during your isolation period. Just like your children the fur-babies are very sensitive.

Please keep us posted on your progress and like Andrea wrote – keep asking questions.
